Spain Non-Lucrative Visa
The Spain Non-Lucrative Visa (Visado de Residencia No Lucrativa) allows financially independent individuals to live in Spain without working locally. Ideal for retirees, passive income earners, and those seeking Mediterranean EU residency.
Who Is This For?
- Non-EU nationals who can demonstrate passive income sufficient to live in Spain without working locally
- Minimum EUR €28,800 per year for a single applicant (approx. EUR €2,400/month)
- Additional EUR €7,200/year for each dependent family member
- No intention to work or conduct business activities in Spain
- Clean criminal record — background check from home country required (apostilled)
- Valid private health insurance with full coverage in Spain and no co-payments
How It Works
- 1
Document Preparation
Gather: passport, apostilled criminal record, medical certificate, private health insurance covering Spain, and proof of income (pension statements, bank statements, investment portfolio, or rental income).
- 2
Apostille & Certified Translation
All non-Spanish documents must be officially apostilled and translated into Spanish by a sworn translator.
- 3
Spanish Consulate Application
Apply at the Spanish consulate responsible for your country of residence. Book an appointment in advance — demand is high. Submit originals and photocopies.
- 4
Visa Processing
Spanish consulate processes the application — typically 4–8 weeks. They may request additional documentation.
- 5
Arrive in Spain & Register
Enter Spain with your visa (valid 1 year initially). Register at your local ayuntamiento (municipal registry — padrón) and obtain your Foreigners Identity Number (NIE).
- 6
Residency Card & Renewals
Apply for your TIE residency card within 30 days of arrival. Renew every 2 years. After 5 years: long-term residency. After 10 years: Spanish citizenship eligibility.

Frequently Asked Questions
Technically the NLV prohibits work in Spain, including remote work. Many remote workers instead use Spain's Digital Nomad Visa (introduced in 2023), which explicitly allows remote work for non-Spanish employers and clients.
Acceptable income sources include: pension income, dividend or investment portfolio returns, rental income from property outside Spain, alimony, or trust income. Employment income from a Spanish employer does not qualify.
To renew and eventually qualify for long-term residency, you must spend more than 183 days/year in Spain (becoming a Spanish tax resident). The NLV requires genuine residency — it is not a non-domicile program.
Spending more than 183 days in Spain makes you a Spanish tax resident, liable for Spanish income tax on worldwide income. Consult a Spanish tax advisor before applying.
After 10 years of legal residence in Spain, you may apply for Spanish citizenship. You must pass a Spanish language test (DELE A2) and a Spanish culture/civics test (CCSE). Spanish citizenship grants full EU citizenship.
