Who Is This For?

  • You have been accepted by a Designated Learning Institution (DLI) in Canada
  • You can demonstrate sufficient funds to cover tuition, living costs, and return travel
  • You have no criminal record and are in good health (medical exam may be required)
  • You can show strong ties to your home country or clear intention to use the study-to-PR pathway
  • You meet the language requirements of your institution (IELTS/TOEFL)
  • You intend to leave Canada at the end of your authorized period unless you become a PR

How It Works

  1. 1

    Choose your DLI and program

Select an accredited Designated Learning Institution. Programs at college or university level are best for the study-to-PR pathway via PGWP.

  2. 2

Receive your Letter of Acceptance (LOA)

You cannot apply for a study permit without an LOA from your chosen Canadian institution.

  3. 3

    Gather your documents

Prepare identity documents, proof of financial support, ties to home country, LOA, and (if required) medical exam results.

  4. 4

Apply for your study permit online

Submit your application to IRCC. Processing time varies by country — apply early.

  5. 5

Receive your study permit & arrive in Canada

On arrival, confirm the study permit conditions. You can usually work 20 hours per week off-campus.

  6. 6

Apply for PGWP after graduation & transition to PR

After graduating from an eligible program, apply for a Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP). Gain Canadian work experience, then apply for PR via the Canadian Experience Class (CEC).

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. Most full-time students at a DLI are eligible to work up to 20 hours per week off-campus during the academic session and full-time during scheduled breaks (winter, summer). Your study permit does not need a separate work permit for off-campus work if it is eligible.

The PGWP allows you to work in Canada for a period equal to the length of your program (up to 3 years) after graduating from an eligible DLI. This Canadian work experience is the key to qualifying for Express Entry's Canadian Experience Class (CEC) and many PNP streams.

To receive a PGWP, you must have studied at a public college, university, or certain private institutions. Short courses under 8 months, or programs at institutions primarily owned by a foreign entity, do not qualify. ITC iLand advises on choosing PGWP-eligible programs strategically.

Common refusal reasons include: insufficient proof of financial support, weak ties to home country, unclear study plan, choosing a program inconsistent with your previous education, or a visa officer's concern that you will not leave Canada at the end of your authorized stay.

Your spouse or common-law partner may be eligible for an open work permit if you are enrolled in a qualifying program (typically at the graduate level or in certain undergraduate programs). Your dependent children can apply for student permits to attend school in Canada.
