Express Entry — Canada Permanent Residence

Canada's flagship immigration system for skilled workers. Express Entry manages applications for three federal programs and offers one of the fastest routes to permanent residence in the world.

Express Entry is Canada's online system for selecting skilled workers for permanent residence. It manages three federal programs — Federal Skilled Worker (FSW), Canadian Experience Class (CEC), and Federal Skilled Trades (FST). Candidates are ranked out of 1,200 points under the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS), and those above each draw's cut-off score receive an Invitation to Apply. Most complete applications are processed in 6 months or less.

How It Works

  1. 1

    Create your Express Entry profile

Enter your education, work experience, language scores, and other details into the IRCC online portal.

  2. 2

    Receive your CRS score

The Comprehensive Ranking System assigns you a score out of 1,200 based on age, education, language, work experience, and adaptability factors.

  3. 3

Enter the pool & wait for an invitation

IRCC holds regular draws and invites candidates above a cut-off CRS score to apply for permanent residence.

  4. 4

Receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA)

Once invited, you have 60 days to submit a complete PR application.

  5. 5

    Submit your PR application

Provide all supporting documents — medical exam, police clearance, biometrics, and proof of funds.

  6. 6

Receive your Confirmation of Permanent Residence (COPR)

After approval, land in Canada to activate your PR status. You will receive your PR card shortly after.

Frequently Asked Questions

There is no fixed minimum — the cut-off score changes with every draw. In 2024, Canadian Experience Class draws have ranged from 491 to 541+. All-program draws have ranged lower. ITC iLand monitors draw history to set realistic expectations for your profile.

IRCC typically holds draws every two weeks, though frequency varies. Some periods see category-based draws targeting specific occupations (healthcare, STEM, trades, French speakers) at lower CRS scores than general draws.

Yes. Common strategies include: retaking IELTS or CELPIP to improve language scores (each band can add 10–50+ CRS points), obtaining a provincial nomination (+600 points), getting a valid Canadian job offer (+50 or +200 points), or pursuing further Canadian education.

A Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) nomination adds 600 points to your CRS score — virtually guaranteeing an Invitation to Apply. Many provinces have Express Entry-aligned streams that let you apply directly to them, even with a lower CRS score.

No. A job offer is not required for most Express Entry programs. However, a valid job offer (from a Canadian employer in an eligible NOC) adds 50–200 CRS points depending on the NOC level, which can be decisive in competitive draws.
