McGill, Toronto, UBC and Alberta are Canada's four universities in the QS 2026 world top 100. Plus the Maclean's 2027 top 10 for Canada and how to read the rankings.
Four Canadian universities are among the top 100 in the world in the QS World University Rankings 2026, and McGill University is the highest of them, at 27th. This guide shows where each of the four sits, then gives the top 10 from the newly redesigned Maclean's 2027 Canadian University Rankings (published October 15, 2026), and ends with the world top 10 for context.
Rankings are one input, not a verdict. They measure different things, change every year, and say nothing about whether a program fits your goals or whether you will be approved for a study permit.
Canada's four universities in the QS world top 100
McGill (Montreal) rose two places to 27th and overtook the University of Toronto, which had been Canada's top-ranked university in QS since 2019. Toronto is 29th. The University of British Columbia (Vancouver) slipped from 38th to 40th, and the University of Alberta (Edmonton) is tied for 94th. None of the four is in the world top 10, which is dominated by US and UK institutions (see the context table below).
| World rank | University | Province |
|---|---|---|
| 27 | McGill University | Quebec |
| 29 | University of Toronto | Ontario |
| 40 | University of British Columbia | British Columbia |
| 94 (tied) | University of Alberta | Alberta |
Top 10 universities in Canada (Maclean's 2027)
Maclean's changed its format this year. The old Medical Doctoral, Comprehensive and Primarily Undergraduate categories are gone, replaced by three lists based on enrolment: Large (more than 30,000 students), Mid-Size (10,000 to 30,000) and Small (under 10,000). Fifty-six universities are ranked across 15 indicators in four areas (student resources, student experience, faculty and reputation), including four new ones: retention, graduation, research volume and research impact. Because there is no single national list, here is the top 10 of each.

For context: the world top 10 (QS 2026)

| Rank | University | Country |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) | United States |
| 2 | Imperial College London | United Kingdom |
| 3 | Stanford University | United States |
| 4 | University of Oxford | United Kingdom |
| 5 | Harvard University | United States |
| 6 | University of Cambridge | United Kingdom |
| 7 | ETH Zurich | Switzerland |
| 8 | National University of Singapore (NUS) | Singapore |
| 9 | University College London (UCL) | United Kingdom |

How to read these rankings
The two systems answer different questions, so they will not agree. QS weighs global research reputation, employer reputation, faculty-student ratio, citations and internationalization, so it favours large research universities. Maclean's ranks only Canadian universities and puts more weight on the student experience and resources, which is why a small school such as Mount Allison can top its list while not appearing in a world ranking at all.
- Program matters more than the university's overall rank. A university can be modest overall and excellent in your field. Check subject-level rankings and the department itself.
- Rankings move. McGill passed Toronto in QS this year, and UBC slipped two places. Do not treat a one- or two-place difference as meaningful.
- Cost and location matter. Tuition for international students varies widely between institutions and programs, and so does the cost of living in each city.
If you plan to study in Canada as an international student
To get a study permit you must be accepted by a designated learning institution (DLI), and every university above is a different institution with its own admission requirements and deadlines. Whether a specific degree leads to a post-graduation work permit, and what that could mean for permanent residence later, depends on the program, your circumstances and IRCC's rules at the time you apply, which change. Nothing here is a guarantee of admission, a permit or an immigration outcome. Check the program and the institution on IRCC's official DLI list before you apply.
