IRCC changes its online asylum application on November 3, 2026. Claims submitted by 11:59 p.m. ET November 2 need no new information unless IRCC asks.
IRCC will change the online asylum application in the IRCC Portal on November 3, 2026. Claims submitted by 11:59 p.m. ET on November 2 do not need new information unless IRCC asks; claims started but not submitted by then will have to answer new questions and review earlier answers. This is a change to how claims are completed online, confirmed on IRCC's asylum pages (updated October 1), not a deadline to claim asylum.
What changes, by situation
IRCC's pages set out three situations:
| Your situation at 11:59 p.m. ET, November 2 | What IRCC says happens |
|---|---|
| Claim submitted in the IRCC Portal | No new information needed unless IRCC asks |
| Claim started in the Portal but not submitted | You answer new questions and review old ones; your personal information is saved |
| Claim made to the CBSA at the border, asked to complete it online, not yet linked or submitted | You will need to link the claim to a Portal account; information the CBSA collected is saved; you answer new questions and review old ones |
Why it is happening
IRCC describes the change as part of its ongoing work to modernise the asylum process. Asylum measures in Bill C-12 (the Strengthening Canada's Immigration System and Borders Act) became law in 2026; IRCC's portal pages do not say which specific provision the November 3 change implements, and IRCC has not published the new questions in advance.
What it does not change
November 2 is not a last day to claim asylum, and missing it does not end a claim. IRCC's border page also says information the CBSA collected will be saved, so reports that border claimants lose that information are not what the official page says. What changes is the set of questions you must answer if your claim is not submitted in time.
Who is affected
People inside Canada with an asylum claim started but not yet submitted in the IRCC Portal, and people who claimed at a port of entry and were told by the CBSA to complete their claim online. Claimants whose claims are already submitted are not asked for anything new unless IRCC contacts them.
What to do next
If your claim is ready, submitting it before 11:59 p.m. ET on November 2 avoids the new questions. Do not rush incomplete or inaccurate answers to beat the cut-off: the information in an asylum claim is examined closely, and errors can harm the claim later. If you claimed at the border, sign in to the IRCC Portal, link your claim, and check every saved answer. Because asylum claims carry serious legal consequences, get advice from a licensed immigration consultant or lawyer; ITC iLand does not handle refugee claims, but you can book a consultation about other immigration options.
