Germany Job Seeker Visa

  • Degree from a German university, or foreign degree assessed via the "anabin" database
  • Minimum 5 years of relevant professional experience
  • Sufficient financial means to support yourself for 6 months (approx. EUR €5,000+)
  • German language skills beneficial — B1/B2 level recommended though English-speaking roles exist
  • Valid health insurance for Germany covering the 6-month period

How It Works

  1. 1

    Qualification Assessment

Check if your foreign degree is recognized in Germany via the "anabin" database. If not listed, obtain a Statement of Comparability (Zeugnisbewertung) from the Central Office for Foreign Education (ZAB).

  2. 2

    Document Preparation

Prepare: passport, degree certificates and transcripts, Statement of Comparability, CV, financial proof (bank statements or blocked account), health insurance, and proof of accommodation in Germany.

  3. 3

    German Consulate Application

Apply for the Job Seeker Visa (Visum zur Arbeitssuche) at the German consulate in your home country. Book an appointment well in advance.

  4. 4

    Visa Processing

German consulate processes the application — typically 4–8 weeks. An interview or additional documents may be requested.

  5. 5

    Arrive & Job Search

Enter Germany and begin your active job search. Use the Federal Employment Agency (BA) portal, attend job fairs, and connect with German recruiters. Trial work up to 10 hours/week is permitted.

  6. 6

    Job Offer & Work Permit

Once you receive a qualifying job offer, convert the Job Seeker Visa to a German work permit or EU Blue Card from within Germany.

German language skills significantly improve your job prospects, particularly outside tech. However, many multinationals and tech firms in Germany operate in English. The visa itself has no language requirement.

The EU Blue Card is a premium work permit for highly qualified non-EU workers earning at least EUR €58,400/year (lower for shortage occupations). It offers faster permanent residency (21–33 months) and is the most advantageous work status in Germany.

Germany has significant shortages in IT, engineering (mechanical, electrical, civil), healthcare (doctors, nurses), skilled trades, and logistics. STEM graduates with international experience have strong prospects.

Generally, no. Family members cannot join during the 6-month job seeker period. Family reunification becomes available once you have a long-term work permit.
