Italy Investor Visa

Italy's Investor Visa (Visto Investitori) offers a pathway to Italian residency through investment in government bonds, Italian companies, innovative startups, or philanthropy. A 2-year renewable visa leading to permanent residency and eventually citizenship.

Italy's Investor Visa (Visto Investitori) grants residency to non-EU nationals through one of four investment routes: an innovative startup from EUR €250,000, an Italian company from EUR €500,000, government bonds from EUR €2,000,000, or a philanthropic donation from EUR €1,000,000. This 2-year renewable visa leads to permanent residency after 5 years and Italian citizenship after 10 years of legal residence.

How It Works

  1. 1

    Investment Selection

Choose from four qualifying investment types based on your goals: innovative startup, established Italian company, government bonds, or philanthropy.

  2. 2

    Pre-Clearance (Nulla Osta)

Apply online to the Italian Investor Visa Committee for pre-clearance. The official target is a decision within 30 days (often 45–60 in practice) — still one of the fastest government decisions in Europe.

  3. 3

    Visa Application at Italian Consulate

With nulla osta in hand, apply for the investor visa at the Italian consulate in your home country. Visa issued for 2 years.

  4. 4

    Investment Completion

Complete the qualifying investment within 3 months of entering Italy. Register with Italian municipality (comune).

  5. 5

    Residence Permit

Apply for Italian residence permit (permesso di soggiorno) at the local immigration office. Initially 2 years, then 3-year periods; no fixed day-count rule to renew — just maintain the investment and apply at least 60 days before expiry.

  6. 6

    EU Permanent Residence

After 5 years: apply for long-term residence (soggiornanti di lungo periodo). Unlike the investor permit itself, this step requires meeting the standard EU continuity test — absences capped at roughly 6 consecutive / 10 total months across the 5 years.

  7. 7

    Citizenship

After 10 years of legal residence: apply for Italian citizenship — the standard non-EU naturalization period, with no investor fast-track. Requires B1-level Italian and a minimum income for the prior 3 years.

Frequently Asked Questions

EUR €250,000 in an Italian innovative startup (società innovativa) is the minimum investment threshold. The startup must be registered in the Italian Business Register as an innovative startup.

Investing EUR €2,000,000 in Italian government bonds (Buoni del Tesoro Poliennali) held for at least 2 years. This is the highest investment threshold but lowest risk as bonds are government-backed.

In spirit, yes — this is not a non-domicile program, and the permit is tied to your registered address in Italy. That said, renewing the investor permit itself carries no formal day-count rule, only that the investment stays maintained. The next step up — EU permanent residence after 5 years — does apply a stricter, formal continuity test (absences capped at roughly 6 consecutive / 10 total months).

After 10 years of continuous legal residence in Italy — the standard non-EU naturalization period, with no fast-track for investors. Requires B1-level Italian, a minimum income for the prior 3 years, and the same continuous-residence test used for permanent residence. Italian citizens have EU citizenship and can live, work, and study across all EU member states.

Yes. Family reunification is available for your spouse, minor children, and dependent adult children once you hold the investor visa.
