Your National Occupational Classification code is the single entry on an immigration application that the most other things depend on. It sets whether your work experience counts toward Express Entry eligibility at all, which of the three federal programs you can qualify under, how many CRS points that experience is worth, and which provincial streams are open to you. The same code has to appear on your employer's reference letter and match the duties it describes.
The TEER level attached to that code carries most of the weight. TEER 0, 1, 2 and 3 occupations qualify for Express Entry; TEER 4 and 5 do not, though several provincial programs still accept them. That single digit is often the difference between a federal route and a provincial one.
