Can You Reuse a Previous Immigration Medical Exam? Only If You Indicate a Canadian Residence

IRCC's public policy lets some applicants skip a new medical exam, but only if they live in Canada and had a low-risk result within five years.

Under an IRCC temporary public policy, some applicants do not need a new immigration medical exam, but only if they have indicated a Canadian residence on their application and completed an exam with a physical within the past five years with a low-risk result. Applicants who have left Canada should not assume an old exam can be reused. The policy runs from October 5, 2022 to October 5, 2029; the IRCC page was last modified October 4, 2024.

What the policy requires

As described on IRCC's public policy page:

  • You applied under the Act and indicated a Canadian residence on the application.
  • You completed an immigration medical exam, including a physical examination, within the last five years.
  • The result was a low-risk assessment (IRCC lists specific codes such as M1 and M3, and compliant M2 or M2-3).
  • Accompanying family members of a principal applicant may qualify if the principal meets the requirements.

Who is likely affected

Former students and workers who have returned home and apply from abroad, because they do not meet the Canadian-residence condition. They should plan for a new exam unless IRCC instructs otherwise.

What this does not cover

Media have reported that IRCC clarified wording for Express Entry in September 2026. We could not confirm that instruction on an official page, so this article relies only on the public policy above. Your own file instructions from IRCC take priority.

What to do next

Check your medical exam date and result before relying on an exemption, and follow the instructions in your own IRCC account or letter. Our visa checker and fee calculator can help you plan costs. If you are unsure, book a consultation.
